Pipe connector applications – what you can build

What you can build with pipe connectors

Tube, connector, Allen key – that is all it takes. Which is precisely why pipe connectors turn up in areas that at first glance have nothing to do with each other: on the farm, in shopfitting, in the factory hall, in the children's room. This page shows what our customers actually use them for.

Railings and fall protection

The most common use. Handrails, stair railings, balcony and terrace railings, roof railings, safety railings on machines and access platforms, wheelchair ramps, mezzanine floors.

The principle: anchor the posts to the substrate with a base plate, lay the handrail on with tees, form the corners with elbows. The complete procedure is set out in our guide to building a railing.

Fences, enclosures and agriculture

Safety fences, milking parlours, agricultural enclosures, stable partitions, bicycle stands and trolley bays. With the grating holders you clamp steel grating up to 8 mm thick directly onto the tube – the combination of tube frame and grating infill has been standard in stable and fence construction for decades.

Industry and occupational safety

Machine guards and enclosures, heavy-duty workstations, racking systems, impact protection, roof fall protection, access platforms, plant in water treatment and recycling. For impact protection and heavy structures, go for Ø 60,3 mm; for racking and guard structures Ø 42,4 mm is usually enough.

The practical advantage in day-to-day operation: a bolted structure can be rebuilt. When the machine changes, the enclosure moves with it – with a welded solution it would be scrap.

Sport, leisure and public spaces

Ball-stop nets for golf, cricket, baseball and football, sports grounds and arenas, playground equipment, theme park barriers and queue management, film sets, exhibition stands.

Retail and shopfitting

Merchandise carriers and retail displays, clothes rails, market stalls, shelving, exhibition displays. Here you usually work with the slim sizes Ø 26,9 mm and Ø 33,7 mm – light, stable enough and visually discreet.

Construction, traffic and signage

Road signs, general signage, commercial billboard frames, motorway control installations, lighting supports, municipal installations, temporary structures, canopies and carports.

Furniture and interior fitting

Industrial-style furniture has been in fashion for years, and the pipe connector look is at its heart: dining tables, desks, shelving, beds, coat racks, room dividers. For furniture, Ø 26,9 mm or Ø 33,7 mm is enough – and the plastic cap belongs on every open tube end so that nobody catches on the cut edge.

What pipe connectors must not be used for

Two limits are important – and we would rather state them clearly than hide them in the small print:

  • No scaffolding. Separate standards and test procedures apply to working scaffolds. Our type test does not cover that, and a pipe connector is not a scaffold coupler – even if it looks similar.
  • Not every component is a railing component. Grating holders (170, 171), collars with hook (182), adjustable corners (125H) and handrail brackets with a straight screw (143W) have not been subjected to alternating loads and are not intended as fall protection. The note appears with every item concerned.

Why the material makes the difference

Many of these applications stand outdoors – for decades. Our pipe connectors are made of malleable cast iron to ASTM A197, hot-dip galvanised to ASTM A153 and additionally electro-galvanised. The clamping screw is made of stainless steel V2A and does not seize, so the structure can still be dismantled years later. The entire range is type-tested by TÜV Rheinland – the details are on the page TÜV test and material.

Your project not among them?

The list is not exhaustive, and that is the point: the system joins standard tubes in almost any conceivable configuration. Tell us what you have in mind – we will tell you which components you need and whether the load values suit your case.
